August 1, 2023 - SciMathMN and MDE are working to upgrade this website. Math broken links are being fixed or replaced. For now, new material for both math and science will be added to the Resources section. Funding for science updates is still being sought.

Science Teaching Practices

The science portion of this STEM Teacher Center was originally developed to support instruction for the 2009 Minnesota science standards. Hence the Frameworks of activities and resources for individual standards reference those standards. Unfortunately, many of the links in those resources are out of date or inactive. Minnesota has a new set of science standards written in 2019. We are seeking funding and capacity to update the STEM Teacher Center to support the new standards. Meanwhile, we are offering a brief listing of some resources to support the new standards and maintaining many of the resources that were written for the 2009 standards which are still relevant. Documents supporting the new 2019 science standards will, for now, be added to this resource section.

Mathematics Teaching Practices

The Standards for Mathematical Practices (what students do) guide the Instructional Teaching Practices teachers use to effectively implement the standards and benchmarks. As the state transitions from the 2007 to 2022 math academic standards, teachers of mathematics need to continually strive to learn from research and remain current within a dynamic field. Teachers need to effectively serve an increasingly diverse student population and constantly improve the results obtained by students. The instructional practices that produce the characteristics of students enacting the Standards of Mathematical Practices as well as the content standards are both replicable and supported by data. The resources linked here capture the current state of recommended teaching practices for mathematics education.

High School Science Course Implementation for Standards and Graduation Requirements

This doucment clarifies the science graduation requirements and relate requirements for licensure.  It give examples of course sequences that meet these requirement.

Using a Career and Technical Education (CTE) credit to meet the chemistry credit or physics credit requirement

The 2011-12 legislative session made changes to the science graduation requirements. The revised statute 120B.024 allows a Career and Technical Education credit to fulfill the chemistry/physics requirement for students who graduate beginning in 2015.  There are several conditions that must be met. The attached document provides advice to districts in fulfilling the statute.

Integrating Mathematics Into Science Lessons - Grade 8-12 Math & Science Links

Download the document below to see suggested links between the science and mathematics standards. This document is organized by the mathematics standards/benchmarks for grades 8-12 and suggests science standards/benchmarks that would fit well with those math topics. We think you will find this a very useful tool in creating STEM lessons for your science classes that will help students see the connections between topics.

Integrating Math and Science into K-8 Technology Education and Engineering Courses

Two separate documents are provided to assist in the process of integrating MN mathematics and science standards into Technology Education and Engineering courses: the first document provides rationale and alignment suggestions for grades K-8 and the second document provides alignment suggestions for high school.
